Ice on the Indoor Coil: Why It Freezes and What Fixes It

Freezing looks like the AC is working hard. It is the opposite — the coil has dropped below zero because it is not absorbing heat, and no amount of cooling will recover it.

You notice it because the airflow drops to almost nothing and the remote still says 18°C. Or because there is a block of ice on the thin copper line where it enters the wall. Both are the same fault in different clothing, and both have a small set of causes worth checking before you call.

Why a coil freezes at all

An evaporator coil absorbs heat from room air. If less air reaches it — because the filter, the blower or the coil itself is blocked — it absorbs less heat and its temperature falls below freezing. Condensate on the fins then turns to ice instead of dripping away.

The second route is a low refrigerant charge. Less refrigerant means lower suction pressure, which means a colder coil, which means ice. Same symptom, entirely different repair.

In both cases the machine is not overworking. It is underperforming, and the ice is a symptom of that.

The four-minute check you can do yourself

Turn the unit off at the remote — not the isolator — and let it stand for at least an hour so the ice melts. Then check, in order:

  • Filter. Hold it to a light. If you cannot see through it, that alone can cause icing in a dusty flat.
  • Blower airflow. With the filter out, run fan-only for two minutes. Weak air at the louver on high speed points to a dust-loaded blower wheel.
  • Coil face. Look through the intake. A coil that looks like felt rather than fins is blocked.
  • Ice on the thin line. Frost only at the flare joint, with the rest of the pipe dry, suggests a restriction or a slow leak rather than airflow.

If the filter and blower check out and the ice returns after a clean, stop testing and book a pressure check.

Airflow restriction: the common case

Nine icing calls out of ten are airflow. The blower wheel in a split AC is a squirrel cage that packs dust on its blades; after three or four years in a Kalyan or Thane flat it can be half blocked while still sounding normal.

This is why a filter wash does not fix icing that has been building for a while. The obstruction has moved from the filter to the wheel. A foam jet service at ₹649 usually clears it; a badly packed wheel needs the deep dismantle service at ₹1,349, because the wheel has to come out to be cleaned properly.

Low refrigerant: the case that needs a leak test

If airflow is clean and the coil still ices, the charge is short. Refrigerant is a sealed system — it does not get used up. A shortfall means a leak somewhere: a flare joint, a brazed connection, or a pinhole in the coil from corrosion.

The correct sequence is pressure check (₹299), leak test, repair the leak (₹1,499), then recharge (₹2,499). Charging gas without finding the leak is the most common way customers pay twice — the gas leaves again within a season.

Be wary of any quote that jumps straight to a gas top-up before a leak test. It will feel like a fix for about six weeks.

What not to do

Do not keep running the unit with ice on the coil. The compressor is pulling low-pressure vapour with less cooling returning to it, which raises discharge temperature and shortens its life.

Do not chip the ice off. The fins are thin aluminium and deform easily, and a bent coil transfers less heat permanently.

And do not set the temperature to 16°C hoping it will thaw the ice. A lower setpoint keeps the compressor running, which makes the ice grow faster.

After the fix

Ask what caused it and write it down. If it was airflow, the interval to watch is your normal service cycle — bring it forward by a couple of months. If it was a leak, ask for the leak location and whether the repair was brazed or flared; that detail matters if it recurs.

Either way, run the unit for a full evening before signing anything off, and check the thin copper line stays dry. Ice returning within a week means the diagnosis was wrong, not that the repair failed.

Key takeaways

  • Ice means the coil is absorbing too little heat, not that the AC is overworking.
  • Nine out of ten icing calls are airflow: filter, blower wheel or blocked coil fins.
  • If airflow is clean, the next suspect is a slow leak — insist on a leak test.
  • Never chip ice off; the fins are thin aluminium.
  • Setting a lower temperature makes ice form faster.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my AC freeze only at night?

Lower ambient temperature and reduced load let the coil run colder, so a marginal airflow problem that copes in the afternoon ices up overnight. It usually points to a partially blocked blower.

Can I just add gas to fix the ice?

Only if a leak test confirms a leak and the leak is repaired first. Adding gas to a leaking system returns the same fault within a season and costs you twice.

Is ice on the outdoor unit the same problem?

No. Frost on an outdoor coil is a heat-pump defrost issue rather than a cooling fault, and it needs a different diagnosis. Ice on the indoor unit is the common one in Mumbai.
