Jet Service, Foam Wash or Deep Dismantle: Which One Does Your AC Need?

Three cleaning levels, three very different jobs. A simple test at your own unit tells you which one you are actually paying for — and whether you are overbuying.

Every service provider in the region offers “jet service”, and many offer “deep cleaning”. The words are not standardised, which is why two quotes for the same unit can differ by ₹800 and both be honest. What follows is the distinction our team uses, and how you can judge your own unit in about two minutes.

What each level removes

Jet service uses pressurised water to flush loose dust from the evaporator coil, the blower wheel and the drain tray. It removes what has settled in the last 8–14 months. It does not remove oil-bound dust, mould film or the compacted mat on a blower that has run through a renovation.

Foam jet service applies a foaming alkaline cleaner to the coil, waits for it to lift the soil, then jets it away. The foam penetrates the fin gap where water alone passes over. This is the level that removes the musty smell caused by biological growth on a damp coil.

Deep dismantle goes further: the indoor unit is opened to the blower housing, the wheel is cleaned off the shaft, and the coil is washed from both faces where the installation allows. It is a labour job, not a chemical one, and it is the only level that reliably clears a blower packed with fibrous dust.

The two-minute test at your own unit

You do not need tools for this.

  1. Look at the blower through the louver. Torch light in, look at the barrel-shaped wheel. If you can see individual blades, a jet service is enough. If it looks like a solid grey cylinder with faint blade lines, it needs dismantling.
  2. Smell the air in the first minute of running. A damp, sour smell after the coil has been wet means biological growth — foam, not plain water.
  3. Check airflow at the louver with your hand. Strong but warm suggests gas or condenser issues. Weak and cold suggests airflow restriction, which is dirt.
  4. Ask when it was last opened. If nobody in the house remembers, treat it as a deep job.

Two of these four answers are usually enough. The most common mistake is booking a ₹399 dry service for a unit that has visible matted dust — the airflow improves for ten days and then falls back.

Time, water and mess

Practical differences matter in an occupied home:

LevelOn-site timeWater handlingBest for
Dry / lite25–35 minNoneUnit serviced within a year
Jet50–70 minService bag, drain to bucketAnnual service
Foam jet70–90 minBag plus dwell timeOdour, visible coil soil
Deep dismantle2–3 hoursBag, partial removal2+ years unserviced, post-renovation

All three wet levels need a power point and a water source within reach. If the flat has no tap on the balcony, plan for a bucket fill before the technician arrives — it saves twenty minutes.

How the price difference is justified

On our card the gap is ₹399 → ₹549 → ₹649 → ₹1,349. The first three steps are small because they are increments of the same visit. The jump to deep dismantle is a different job: two to three hours, partial disassembly, and reassembly that has to be gas-tight and drain-tight.

A unit that has run through painting or tiling work nearly always needs the deep level. Construction dust is fine, abrasive and slightly adhesive; it coats the blower and the coil face, and a jet pushes it deeper into the fin gap. If your building had work done and the AC was running, book accordingly.

Conversely, paying ₹1,349 for a unit serviced eleven months ago is overbuying. The honest recommendation depends on what the technician sees, not on the highest line on the card.

What a good technician does before quoting

They open the unit first. A scope decided from the doorway is a guess. On arrival, the sequence should be: remove filters, inspect the coil face and blower, check the drain tray, then recommend a level and confirm the price with you before starting.

If the recommendation is the deep level, ask what it includes — blower off the shaft, both coil faces, drain tray scrub. If the answer is “we wash it more”, it is a foam job being sold at a dismantle price.

After any wet service, expect a drain flush and a ten-minute test run. Water should leave the unit, not sit in the tray. That test is how you avoid a ceiling stain two weeks later.

Office ceiling with cassette AC units and recessed lighting
Cassette units combine both cleaning challenges: coil soil plus ceiling access — they are always quoted after inspection.

Key takeaways

  • Dry service restores airflow only; it does not clean the coil.
  • Foam is the right level when the air smells damp or the coil has visible soil.
  • Deep dismantle is the only level that clears a matted blower wheel.
  • Post-renovation units almost always need the deep level.
  • A quote given before the unit is opened is a guess, not a scope.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my AC needs foam cleaning instead of a normal service?

A sour or damp smell in the first minute of running, plus visible dark film on the coil, indicates biological growth that plain water will not remove. That is a foam job.

Is deep dismantle safe for an old AC?

Usually yes, but brittle plastic housings and corroded screws are a real risk on units older than eight years. A technician should inspect before committing to full dismantling.

How often should a deep dismantle be done?

Roughly every third service, or immediately after renovation work. Most homes need it once every two to three years.
